England Hand Midfield Chance to South African-Born Star

England Hand Midfield Chance to South African-Born Star

England head coach Steve Borthwick has added Bristol Bears centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg to the national training squad ahead of this summer’s Nations Championship, giving the South African-born player a huge opportunity to impress on the international stage.

The 29-year-old has been one of the standout midfield players in the Premiership over the last few seasons and his strong form has finally earned recognition from England selectors. Janse van Rensburg previously represented South Africa Under-20s, but the Rugby Football Union successfully appealed to World Rugby to clear him for England duty.

Although he cannot play against South Africa on 4 July because he officially qualifies for England on residency grounds a few days later, he could make his debut against Fiji or Argentina later in the month.

Borthwick’s latest squad shows that England are looking to refresh the team after a difficult Six Nations campaign earlier this year. Several young and uncapped players have been included as the coaching staff search for more energy, pace and creativity ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Janse van Rensburg’s inclusion is one of the biggest talking points because England have struggled at times in midfield. His physical style, strong running and ability to play multiple backline positions could offer England a different attacking option this summer.

The Bristol star joined English rugby with London Irish before moving to Bristol Bears, where he quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his consistent performances. He has twice been named in the Premiership Team of the Season and many supporters believed an England call-up was only a matter of time.

A number of talented young stars have also been named in England’s training squad. Noah Caluori of Saracens, who has scored plenty of tries this season, gets another opportunity to shine. Archie McParland and Charlie Bracken have also been selected, while Bath youngster Kepu Tuipulotu keeps making progress in English rugby.

There were also some surprise omissions. Bath centres Ollie Lawrence and Max Ojomoh were left out, while winger Henry Arundell was not included despite recent strong club performances.

England will begin preparations with training camps at Pennyhill Park before facing a France XV in a non-cap match in June. Their Nations Championship campaign then starts with a tough test against world champions South Africa, followed by matches against Fiji and Argentina.

For Janse van Rensburg, this summer could become the biggest moment of his career. After years of hard work in club rugby, he now has the chance to prove himself on one of the sport’s biggest stages in an England shirt.
