The New York Knicks moved one step closer to an NBA championship after a dramatic 105-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. The win gives New York a strong 2-0 lead in the series and puts heavy pressure on San Antonio as the action shifts to New York.
For most of the night, the game looked like it could go either way. The Spurs fought back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter and even managed to take a brief lead. Their comeback was powered by Victor Wembanyama, who once again showed why he is considered one of the league’s brightest young stars.
However, the final moments told a different story.
With the score tied at 104-104 and less than 10 seconds remaining, Wembanyama grabbed a rebound and looked ready to help the Spurs set up a final possession. Instead, he threw a pass that unexpectedly hit teammate Stephon Castle and bounced away. Knicks star Jalen Brunson quickly recovered the ball, forcing San Antonio into a desperate situation. Wembanyama then committed a foul, sending Brunson to the free-throw line.
Brunson calmly made one of two free throws to give New York a one-point lead. The Spurs still had a final chance to win but Wembanyama’s last-second jumper missed the target allowing the Knicks to escape with another victory.
Even though the ending was disappointing for San Antonio Victor Wembanyama had a strong game. He scored 29 points and played a big role in the Spurs’ comeback during the final quarter. However a late turnover and missed chances in the closing seconds ended up being the moments fans remembered most. After the game, Wembanyama admitted he needed to stay calmer and make better decisions in important situations.
The Knicks also got valuable contributions from several players. Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby made important plays on both ends of the court. Jalen Brunson did not have his best shooting night, but he stepped up when it mattered most and helped secure the win for New York.
With the victory, the Knicks have now won 13 consecutive playoff games and are just two wins away from their first NBA championship since 1973. Throughout the postseason, New York has consistently found ways to win tough, close games and has shown great confidence under pressure.
For the Spurs, the challenge is now enormous. Falling behind 0-2 in the NBA Finals is difficult enough, but losing both games at home makes the task even harder. San Antonio will need a strong response in Game 3 if it hopes to keep its championship dreams alive.
As the series heads to New York, momentum clearly belongs to the Knicks. One costly mistake in the closing seconds may have changed the entire direction of the NBA Finals.
