Former Álvaro Arbeloa has officially confirmed that he will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season after a short and challenging spell as head coach.
Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s final La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao, Arbeloa admitted that Saturday’s game at the Santiago Bernabéu will be his last in charge. The former defender, who spent many years at the club as both a player and coach, said he hopes his departure is only a “see you later” rather than a final goodbye.
Arbeloa became Real Madrid’s head coach in January after Xabi Alonso left the club. Fans had big hopes because Arbeloa knows the club well and had done a good job with the youth teams. But things did not go smoothly, as Madrid struggled for consistent results and pressure on the team continued to grow throughout the season.
During his time in charge, Real Madrid failed to win a major trophy. Reports of dressing-room tension and disappointing performances added to the pressure on the Spanish coach. Despite those problems, Arbeloa said he remained proud of the work he and his staff had done during a complicated period.
The 43-year-old thanked the players, club staff, and fans for supporting him during the season. He said Real Madrid will always feel like his home after spending nearly 20 years at the club as a player, youth coach, and first-team manager.
There has already been strong speculation about who could replace Arbeloa next season. Several reports have linked former Madrid boss José Mourinho with a sensational return to the club. Arbeloa confirmed he would not be joining Mourinho’s coaching staff if the Portuguese manager comes back.
As a player, Arbeloa enjoyed great success with Real Madrid and also helped Spain national football team win major international trophies, including the FIFA World Cup and European Championship titles. Because of his history with the club, many fans still believe he could return to Madrid in the future in another role.
Now all eyes are on Real Madrid as the club gets ready to rebuild the team for next season. Even though Arbeloa’s time as head coach was short, his emotional goodbye showed how much the club and its fans still mean to him.
