Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has stressed that while he’s fully focused on the present, the club should be ready for change when his time at the Etihad eventually comes to an end.
The Spaniard, who extended his contract last year through June 2027, insisted there are no ongoing talks about him leaving before then. But speaking ahead of City’s Premier League game with West Ham, Guardiola acknowledged the reality of football’s constant evolution and the importance of being prepared for the future.
“There are no discussions – end of the subject,” he said. “I’m here, I love being here, and I want to stay. But none of us is going to be here forever, and the club must be ready for everything.”
Guardiola, 54, made it clear that speculation about his exit is nothing new it comes up every season and that his focus remains fully on the current campaign and upcoming fixtures rather than his own future.
City have reportedly already started looking at potential candidates to succeed him whenever that day arrives. One of the names linked with the job is Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea manager and former Guardiola assistant, though Maresca has dismissed those rumours as “100% speculation” and insists he is committed to Chelsea.
Despite the chatter, Guardiola reiterated that he’s happy at City and still motivated by what lies ahead both in the league and in cup competitions with no immediate decisions looming.
