The BBC has confirmed several big names for its coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with former stars Olivier Giroud, Cesar Azpilicueta and Benni McCarthy joining the broadcaster’s expert panel for the tournament.
The tournament, which will take place across the United States, Canada and Mexico, is expected to be the biggest World Cup in football history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches. The BBC plans to bring fans complete coverage through television, radio, digital platforms and social media.
Former France national football team striker Giroud is one of the most respected forwards of his generation and brings huge international experience to the panel. The World Cup winner is expected to offer expert analysis on attacking play and major tournament pressure throughout the competition.
Azpilicueta, who enjoyed a successful career with Chelsea F.C. and the Spain national football team, will also provide insight from a defender’s point of view. Known for his leadership and consistency, the Spaniard adds strong tactical knowledge to the BBC’s line-up.
Meanwhile, former South Africa striker Benni McCarthy brings more experience to the BBC team. After retiring from football, he moved into coaching and has earned praise for his knowledge of the modern game.
The new arrivals will join several familiar faces already part of the BBC football team. Presenters including Alex Scott, Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates are expected to lead the tournament coverage.
The pundit team will also include famous names such as Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Joe Hart. Former Tottenham manager Thomas Frank is also expected to feature during the tournament.
According to BBC Sport, fans will be able to watch 54 matches live on BBC television, while every game from the tournament will be covered across BBC digital services, including online highlights, podcasts and social me

BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski said the aim is to make the 2026 World Cup one of the broadcaster’s biggest sporting events ever, with coverage available around the clock for football fans.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will start on June 11 and end with the final on July 19. Fans across the world are excited for the big tournament.
